Pak Harto was known for his hard work, discipline, and attention to detail. He had a very structured daily routine, waking up early in the morning and arriving at the office at 08:00 am sharp. His neat writing and strong memory, often referred to as photographic memory, were some of his distinctive features. He was also skilled with numbers and had a passion for reading. Pak Harto encouraged people to pursue studies in science and technology, even abroad, despite never having been educated overseas. He was always seen with a smile on his face and rarely showed anger, preferring silence when upset.
In 1983, I became Pak Harto’s son-in-law. Before that, I had served as a captain in the military, leading operations in East Timor. During my time in the army, I had the opportunity to witness Pak Harto’s exemplary work ethic and dedication. He would often work late into the night, reading and signing over 40 folders and letters every evening. Despite his demanding schedule, Pak Harto maintained a strict routine, with time set aside for golf and receiving guests.
Pak Harto’s meticulous nature extended to his deep understanding of Javanese philosophy and Indonesian history. He often incorporated ancient teachings into his leadership style, emphasizing the importance of traditional wisdom in guiding a successful life. One of his famous teachings, “ojo lali, ojo dumeh, ojo ngoyo,” encapsulates his belief in mindfulness and perseverance.
I remember a moment before a military operation in East Timor when Pak Harto summoned me to his residence. He offered me three pieces of advice: “ojo lali, ojo dumeh, ojo ngoyo.” Despite expecting financial assistance, I left his home with only words of wisdom. Reflecting on his guidance during the journey back to my battalion, I realized the profound significance of his advice, considering his extensive combat experience and leadership in various military operations.
Pak Harto’s legacy as a dedicated and disciplined leader lives on through his teachings and actions. His commitment to excellence and continuous learning serve as an inspiration to many, guiding them towards a path of success and fulfillment in life.
