Pak Wismoyo was a commander who had a significant influence on me. His teachings had a personal impact on me, particularly his emphasis on always thinking good, doing good, and speaking well. He believed that one should not harbor ill thoughts towards others, a principle that has stayed with me. I found his values to be beneficial and in line with Indonesian and TNI culture.
He believed that happy men were brave men, and that a leader should uplift his troops through activities like singing, sports, and group activities. When I first met Pak Wismoyo Arismunandar, he was serving as the Deputy Assistant for Security (Waaspam) in KOPASSANDHA, while I was a Second Lieutenant. Over time, he became the Commander of KOPASSANDHA Group 1, and I got to know him better. His motto of ‘Think good, do good, and speak well’ had a profound impact on me.
He believed in fostering good spirits and humor among his troops, and encouraged us to be enthusiastic and generous with our applause. Despite some mocking from others, I saw the value in his approach. He emphasized the importance of creating a happy atmosphere and bonding with his men through shared activities.
He rarely displayed anger, and was forgiving of mistakes, often giving second and third chances. His motto of ‘discipline is my breath, loyalty is my soul, honor is everything’ resonated with me and guided my actions in GERINDRA. He also emphasized the importance of not speaking ill of others, echoing Pak Harto’s advice.
Pak Wismoyo led by example, participating in activities with his troops despite his injuries. He was particularly skilled in marksmanship, and encouraged me to excel in shooting as a member of the Infantry Corps. He often included me in shooting competitions, pushing me to improve my skills.
Before my first operation as a Company Commander, he reminded me of the importance of being close to God, as I would be responsible for the lives of my soldiers. His guidance and teachings have stayed with me throughout my military career, shaping my leadership style and approach.
